Greece 2022 - Day 15: Folegandros on foot
We were woken around 5am this morning by a Meltemi, or a strong wind that suddenly blew in. The laundry we had hung to dry on the balcony last night was strewn around. The waves were crashing on the beach just below our hotel room created an amazing sound. After collecting the laundry, we went back to sleep. When we woke up at 7am, the wind was mostly gone, but the ocean was still a bit angry. After a quick coffee, we set out for morning hike from the hotel, heading northwest along the sharp cliffs. I know this is beginning to sound repetitive, but the views were spectacular.
Because we were out so early, we were treated with the sight of a local shepherd leading a donkey laden with supplies out to feed his small herd of goats on a cliff side pasture.
Back at the hotel we indulged in our daily breakfast of Greek yogurt with honey and walnuts, along with fresh squeezed orange juice and a variety of fresh baked breads and pastries.
We then packed up and set out on our scooters to find Katergo breach which had been recommended to us by the scooter rental company. This beach is located at the Southern tip of the island. The road ends at a rudimentary, rocky parking lot where a trail takes you the rest of the way to the beach on foot. Getting to Katergo beach required a slightly shorter hike than yesterday; it was only about 1.5 km and about 20 minutes with more forgiving terrain.
We reached the beach and were greeted with more amazing views. It pays to select more remote beaches that require a lengthy walk to access as they are not frequented by a lot of tourists. When we arrived, there were only a few people at the beach, and for the 3 hours we were there, there was never more than about 8 people at any given time (including two nudists - sorry, no pics!). Due to the earlier winds, the water was a bit choppy, but it made for some great bobbing in the crystal-clear waves. The temperature of the water was absolutely perfect; just cool enough to be refreshing after the hike in, but also warm enough to be able to stay in the water for a long period of time.
Then, it was time to return our little Lambretta scooters. There may have been a few stops along the way for some last-minute road side photo ops. We had so much fun on these things; definitely the way to get around on Folegandros!
