Greece 2022 - Day 16: Farewell Folegandros...Hello Santorini!

One last look at the port of Folegandros

Once again, we woke to strong morning winds and a raging sea on Folegandros.  After an early morning run, we packed up and headed for our last seaside breakfast at the Blue Sand Hotel and Suites

Today’s weather system proved to be fiercer than yesterday causing our ferry to be delayed by nearly an hour.  The sailing between Folegandros and Santorini was a bit rough, but thankfully it was a short trip.  We arrived on the majestic island of Santorini around 1pm.  A driver was waiting to take us from the port to our hotel in Firastefani.  Our room at the Exclusive Plan Suites was nothing short of spectacular.  The rooms are essentially caves that have been carved out of the side of the cliffs high above the sea.  Our room was extremely spacious with bedroom, bathroom, living area and kitchenette, as well as an outdoor terrace with hot tub, and an upper deck for sunbathing.  Both outdoor areas faced the iconic caldera, perfect for taking in the sunsets that are so amazing here on Santorini.

After unpacking a few things, we set out to explore Fira, or the old town of Santorini, which was a short 10-minute walk away.  Even though it was not yet peak tourist season, the port was packed with cruise ships making the town crammed full of people.  We spent a few hours wandering around Fira browsing the shops.  We also stopped in for a delicious lamb gyro from the Meat Corner Grill.  So delicious!

After having enough of the crowds in Fira we headed back to our hotel where we relaxed in the late afternoon sun on our upper deck.  The sunset was beautiful!

Once the sun had disappeared, we decided to venture out to find a late-night snack.  Most of the restaurants on Santorini are super busy and require reservations.  We managed to snag a table at a cute little restaurant called Vanilia.  We ordered a Greek salad and a selection of small plates including Dolmades (stuffed grape leaves), grilled pita bread with oregano and sea salt, and of course, the delicious fried tomato balls, a traditional dish on Santorini.  Everything was so fresh and delicious, we decided to make reservations for dinner tomorrow as well.

Back at the hotel, we enjoyed some hot chocolate and relaxed in our outdoor hot tub, while the sea mist drifted in over the cliffs creating a mystical atmosphere.  I definitely understand why so many people flock to this island!
