Greece 2022 - Day 20: Sorry Santorini...it's not you, it's me.

Today was our last full day in Greece.  We left Santorini just after noon on a high-speed ferry bound for Athens.  We enjoyed our time on Santorini, but I can’t say it was the highlight of our trip.  I understand why so many people flock to Santorini, especially on their first trip to Greece…the views are spectacular and the sunsets are beautiful.  However, this island is just not for me.  Santorini has very little in the way of what I would consider to be “real” Greek culture.  It has more of a “Disney does Greece” kinda feel.  Had it not been for the fact that this was Ian’s first visit to Greece, and well…everyone needs to go to Santorini once in their life…we probably would have given this island a miss.  It’s the throngs of people, the overpriced everything, and the general lack of authenticity and hospitality that kills it for me.  And the sunsets…sure they’re nice, but they’re not that special; and nowhere on the island can you enjoy the view privately and bask in the tranquility of the setting sun.

The ferry to Athens was smooth, running mostly on time.  The boarding process was the usual mayhem of Greek ferry travel that continues to amuse and entertain us.

Once on board, we indulged in a snack of warm Spanakopita and wine.

The ferry arrived at the Port of Pireaus in Athens around 6pm, and from there, we found our way to the metro station.  After a change of trains at Monastiraki station, we made it to the airport and walked the short distance to the Sofitel Hotel where we would spend the night before flying home tomorrow.

After a long day of travel, we decided to order room service.  We had our last Greek salad and a couple of club sandwiches (you can never go wrong with a room service club sandwich!).

Tomorrow, we fly back to Nova Scotia, and back to the real world.  We have had an incredible three weeks in Greece, enjoying the Mediterranean sun and turquoise waters, the culture and friendliness of the people, the winding roads and cute little mountain towns, and most of all…the food.  We’ll definitely be returning to this amazing country...minus a visit to Santorini!
